The Hoffers’ family tree.
How do we do it? We have God’s abundant grace. Is it hard at times? Sure! Do we get tired? Absolutely! Are we happy? You bet! By following God’s will and not our own, God has blessed us with true happiness.

How do we do it?
This is the question that’s been asked of us time and again. We are Ben and Debbie Hoffer. We’ve been married for 25 years and have seven or so children. The “or so” is because God continues to bring children into our lives.
Infertility led us to adopt two children. At that time we thought our family was complete. God had other plans for our family and began to reveal his heart for children to us.
The statistics surrounding teenagers aging out of foster care deeply moved us. The facts show that their futures have an extremely low chance of success. These young adults need at least one person in their lives who will love and encourage them. That’s why we started the journey to become a foster family. Everything changed during the training classes, when we learned there was a sibling group that needed a home. The youngest was 18 months old! I told them, “No way! We are looking for teenagers.” We were 52 years old. No way did we need a baby – with diapers!
My human self, my logical self, was saying, “no.” However, God was whispering in my ear, saying, “This is the plan I have for you.” So we adopted two more children. Then, with his wonderful sense of humor, God brought a 17-year-old foster daughter to us a few months later. It was very obvious that God wanted her to be with us.
Over the last two years we have hosted three more teenagers and seven additional younger foster children. We always have a house full of children, sometimes as many as nine at a time! We are busy parenting and mentoring as many children as God brings to us.
God has led us to be involved in the Abba’s Children adoption support ministry here at the Hershey Free Church. This support group allows us to help others by sharing our experiences, encouragement and knowledge with anyone who has God’s heart for children. Wall-to-wall children isn’t for everyone, but everyone can do something. The Abba’s Children ministry is a place for people to learn about what they can do to help meet the needs of God’s children who have no families.
